This Friday is a little bittersweet for me. As most of y’all know, I’m in grad school working on my master’s degree in Library Media. Along with classes that I take, I’m also required to complete a 300 hour internship. Luckily the majority of those hours I can get at the school where I teach, but a small number of those hours have to be in an elementary school library.
So this whole week I’ve been at a local elementary school library working under the librarian there (who, by the way, is so unbelievably nice and such a great librarian). I’ve checked in/out book, shelved books, and most importantly, taught all of her classes this week. Since I’m used to seventh grade, the elementary age (which at this school is pre-k through 4th grade) has been quite interesting!
I have tons of cute pictures, but they all contain little kids so I’m not going to post those. But this is a picture of me reading to a group of kids. Our lesson this week has been about not judging a book by its cover, and I’ve been trying to relate it to candy that might look appealing and turn out gross and vice versa. It’s been hilarious the things they say.
So my Friday Favorites this week definitely has to be some of the things said to me by the kids.
-these kids love to give hugs and I love receiving them!
-when I asked if anyone’s pet was their valentine, one little boy raised his hand and said, “My cat died.” Try keeping a straight face during that!
-a kindergartener peeked his head back in the library after just leaving and looked at me and said, “You’re the best!”
-yesterday I was reading to a group of first graders and a girl got up and walked up to me and whispered in my ear, “I like your dress” and then went and sat down haha!
-I was introducing myself to the pre-k class and right after I said that my name was Mrs. Shaneyfelt, one kid raised her hand and told me her entire name–middle name included! So of course I told her it was nice to meet her. Then everyone wanted to tell me their whole name so I went and let those kids do it. I had to stop the conversation when they started telling me their mom’s name!
-when I was asking about eating candy that looked good but tasted gross, one little boy said, “I don’t like onions.”
-And the funniest/strangest moment from this week: I was standing with two 2nd grade girls talking about their books. One girl tells me that her grandmother died recently, so I told her I was sorry. Then the other told me hers did too and she has to go to the “vegetation”–I said, “The visitation?” This is the conversation that followed: (I can’t make this stuff up haha!)
Girl A: I went to my grandmother’s the other night and they had to sew her mouth shut. Why do they do that?
Me: (obviously shocked that she asked me that) You know that’s not really her, right?
Girl A: Yeah, but why do they do that?
Me: Um, to keep it closed
Girl A: But why do they need to close it?
Me: Do you sleep with your mouth open at night?
Girl A: Yes
Me: See, that’s why they need to close it. (Hahaha! I mean, what do you say to that?)
Next week I’ll be back teaching like normal, but I’ve really enjoyed the elementary-aged kids!
