I didn’t read very much in July and August (reason why: here) so reading one book per month wasn’t really blog-worthy. But September came along and I got out of that rut because I read FOUR WHOLE BOOKS! I know! And basically I read three of those books within a 5 day span 🙈 Dustin wondered if I was ever going to talk to him again ha!
In July I read The Sinner after seeing the mini series previews that featured Jessica Biel as the main character. Those previews were so intriguing that I immediately downloaded the book on my iPad because I wanted to read it before the tv series started. This book wasn’t written in English, so it’s been translated but done in a really great way. The book opens with Cora, the main character, at the beach with her husband and infant son. She is stuck in a marriage she hates, so she plans to drown herself. Then out of no where, she stabs the man in front of her on the beach to death. The rest of the book deals with trying to figure out why Cora did killed a man. Let me just say this about the book, I wouldn’t suggest it unless you’re a fan of sick and twisted storylines like Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl or any of her other books. I only finished reading it because I wanted to know what happened (didn’t see it coming), but I didn’t end up watching the mini series because I thought the book was so gross.
In August I read The Glass Castle so I could have the book read before the movie came out in theaters….see a pattern with my summer reading?! I was hooked from the start with this book. I still don’t know how Jeanette Walls has grown up into a functional human being. I’m not typically a fan of memoirs, but her life was so interesting (and even shocking) that I really enjoyed it. I would highly recommend this to everyone–even if you don’t like reading anything autobiographical!
Ever since Shay started posting reviews of Elin Hilderbrand’s books on her blog, I started reading them and couldn’t stop! My local library only has Winter Street which is the first of the series, and since I knew it was Christmas themed, I thought I would wait until Christmas to read it. Nope. I picked it up the weekend Hurricane Irma hit and started reading it. Then I immediately bought the other two on my iPad and read those within two days. The stories center on the Quinn family. The parents are divorced and the husband, Kelley, runs an inn on Nantucket island with his second wife. Their inn is known for their Christmas party. Kelley and his ex-wife, Margaret, have three adult children so you get the stories from the points of view of all of the characters. Elin Hilderbrand is so good to write well developed characters who also deal with issues in their lives. She released a fourth book, Winter Solstice, on Tuesday and I’m waiting to buy it after I finish my current book. You should read these books even though it’s not the Christmas season–they are that good!
